Yesterday we rope dragged again. We found 14 nests, 12 of which were Long-billed Dowitchers. They tend to stick to their nest until approached within feet, or even inches, so the rope dragging really works on them.

Today was our day off, so, like usual, I slept in. When I got up my birding friend here told me about a sparrow he saw, but wasn't sure exactly what it was. He said it had white outer tail feathers and could be a Vesper Sparrow, a rare bird for Alaska, let alone Barrow. We went out right away and saw it, and after taking some notes, decided on Vesper Sparrow. Then it sang for us, letting us know we were correct! I borrowed a friends camera and got some pictures. I think it is a fairly dull bird for this time of year, but Vesper Sparrow none the less. Anyone reading this care to chime in on how rare of a bird it is for Alaska? The range doesn't reach the state, I'm just a little curious.

There is another whale festival going on today. Hopefully this time I get to try the blanket toss! I did hear that people get hurt somewhat frequently. I saw a lady walking out with a broken arm last time. I guess I should at least try it...
