| Day 5- 6/6/08
Today was more orientation and protocols. In the morning, we went
over how to nest search, snow survey, predator survey and other stuff.
In the afternoon we went into the field for a few hours to search for
nests. Only found Semipalmated Sandpiper nests, but we were
looking for Dunlin. While in the field, I saw my first Short-eared
Owl for Barrow. Things were really moving on the iced over Arctic
Ocean, so at 7pm I decided to seawatch for an hour. Nothing too good,
but had huge Eider flocks flying out really far, and a few close flocks.
About 150 Common Eiders and 5 King Eiders and 7 Arctic
Terns. People have been seeing all 4 Eiders, but I have yet to see
Spectacled and Steller's. Hopefully soon. I also heard the Red-necked
Stints were back, but I looked later and did not see them.
